Two live versions of our sunshine celebration, both from Glasgow: the first is from our anniversary show at the Barrowland Ballroom, October 16th 2016; the second from the free acoustic gig we played at Sleazy's for their 20th anniversary, November 17th 2011. There are no 90s-era live recordings of the song with the proper lyrics because for some reason Aidan thought it would be cool to change the words every night on tour, to reflect what was happening on the road (ooh, meta!). Sometimes there were no lyrics at all – there was one night in Newcastle where Aidan and a certain member of Mogwai wrestled on stage while the band played on; another in Glasgow had Brendan O'Hare replace Aidan on vocals (we actually have a recording of that one, but it's ... not good). Then in 1998 we stopped playing it because we wanted to focus more on the sad songs, and it wasn't performed again until 2006 when we played our "last" gigs, which was the first time the song was ever performed with the full, proper lyrics, ten years after it came out. Very odd behaviour.
(The more eagle-eyed among you might recognise the couch on the cover – that's the downstairs bar at the Barrowlands. The photo was taken the night we (technically) played there for the first time, supporting Gene and The Supernaturals, February 1997.)

A group that I know only too well, I’ve been with them for nearly 30 years; from their Glaswegian basement origins to their current status as Arena band. My enthusiasm for their later output may have tempered somewhat as the mighty ‘Gwai evolved their sound to avoid pigeonholing, but there is nothing better than when they lay waste to a venue via the sheer euphoria of ‘Helicon 1’. They’re still devastating live and, after all those years, THE authority in Instrumental Rock music. Logen Ninefingers
